Silicon Carbide is Synthetic material having combination of Silicon Carbon. It is granular, low sulphur additive to C.I. and S.G. Iron.

Function

Silicon Carbide is a refined ,synthetically manufactured product containing combination of Silicon and Carbon with very low sulphur. It is used to raise the Silicon and Carbon content in C.I. and S.G. Iron. It is required to sprayed on to liquid metal. It dissolve after 1200 degrees and Silicon and Carbon gets absorbed in to the metal.

Application Rate

SThe quantity of application depends upon initial Silicon and Carbon level in the metal and the finally 90% to 92% and recovery of Silicon ranging from 60% & Carbon ranging from 20% to30%. Normal addition rate ranges from 0.1 to 0.8% of metal. It is used in induction furnaces.

Advantages

Economical way to add Silicon and Carbon Very low level of Sulphur It reduces Pin Hole porosity. It reduces Chilling tendency. It improves machinability. It improves furnace lining life.

Description

Added to the furnace as a means of controlling Silicon and Carbon content in the base Iron. Also has a preconditioning effect by dissolving into the melt and creating nuclei for inoculation treatment and Graphite precipitation. Used as a deoxidising agent in ladle furnaces and electric arc furnaces during slag treeatment, which enhances furnace life. Can substitute ferro alloys such as Ferro Silicon to provide a cheaper, more efficient source of alloying elements required. Silicon carbide is used for the de-oxidation and re-carburation of cast iron and steel in foundries. Metallurgical grade Silicon Carbide grain is a unique material for use in the production of iron and steel. It is used in the foundry industry for electric furnace production of gray, ductile, and malleable iron. It is an excellent source of carbon and silicon, promoting nucleation and rendering the iron more responsive to inoculation, deoxidizing the iron, which enhances furnace lining life.
